BARF/Raw Diet

BARF/Raw Diet

Biologically Appropriate Raw Food or Bones And Raw Food

BARF dogs and bones
All our dogs are fed on raw food.

BARF can seem somewhat daunting at first and indeed very alien to the way most of us have fed dogs in recent years ie complete kibble.

                           Everyone enjoying a bone!!

Our reason for changing from kibble to raw was very simple. After Vega had her monster litter she became very ill. After speaking to several people we took advice from Lorraine Lefevre of Kegluneq Sled Dogs (the BARF queen!!) and started feeding Vega on raw food. The dramatic improvement we saw in her condition convinced us to change the rest over to raw.

This decision was not taken lightly. We read as much informtion as we could, bought books, spoke to lots of people both pro & anti BARF to get a balanced view. Understanding nutrition and the effects of food on your dog is incredibly important.

We took the plunge and started feeding raw.........

5 years on and we wouldn't change!!!

Our dogs get a variety of food including

Chicken - carcasses or minced
Lamb - breast and minced with bone
Offal - liver, kidney and heart
Tripe - minced and chunked
Fish - tuna, sardines, pilchard (tinned in oil or tomatoe sauce never in brine) and salmon
Cottage Cheese

BARF BC pups

Pups are started of with a chicken wing at 3 weeks old to have a suck on! At 4 weeks old they are given minced chicken without bone. Once they are 5 weeks old they move on to minced meats with fine ground bone and chicken wings.

3 week old Buddie & Travis first taste of RAW!!
BARF pups and ribs

Lamb ribs are great at 6 weeks old to help those needle sharp teeth coming through!!!

All our pups leave with a 2 week supply of BARF and we thoroughly recommend new owners continue with this diet, so diet sheets are given as well.

You may find that vets with be very anti BARF. Unfortunately many vets are under commission from dog food manufacturers so will try to sell your their preferred food. You may also be told that bones will cause impaction or splinter and pierce your dogs intestine, neither of which will happen if you feed your dog correctly.
